Hear by Right offers tried and tested standards for organisations across the statutory and voluntary sector to assess and improve practice and policy on children and young people’s participation.

This addition and accompanying resources take account of children and young peoples trust arrangements, increased partnership working and the every child matters outcomes for children and young people. It sets out clear and effective measures to safeguard against tokenism.

The Hear by Right standards framework is based on the 7 S model for organisational change: shared values, strategies, structures, systems, staff skills and knowledge and style of leadership. It relies on self- assessment across three levels: Emerging, Established and Advanced. Each level builds on the last. This ensures children and young people’s involvement is built in and not just bolted on.

The electronic mapping and planning tool on the CD sets out the standards and indicators in table form for easy completion. This helps to develop the active involvement strategy based on clear evidence, self assessment and agreed priorities.

Building Standards are tools developed with children and young people themselves to involve them directly in the mapping and planning process. The What’s changed tool helps record and evaluate what has changed because of genuine dialogue with children and young people.
