SUMMARY:Youth Work Connect - Bringing democratic education to life: The role of youth work
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is linked to Bringing Democratic Education to Life: Guidance for the Youth Work Sector. SUMMARY:Bringing Democratic Education to Life: Guidance for the Youth Work Sector
DESCRIPTION:Supporting youth workers to help young people understand\, experience and shape democracy. \n\n\n\nYork St John University and the National Youth Agency (NYA) are delighted to host the launch of the new Informal Democratic Education Practice Guidance. Developed through research led by Dr Carole Pugh and written in partnership with the National Youth Agency\, this guidance recognises the vital role youth work plays in supporting young people to understand democracy\, explore political issues\, develop critical thinking and influence the decisions that affect their lives. As voting rights are extended to 16 and 17-year-olds across the UK\, there is a growing need for high-quality democratic education that helps young people navigate political information\, understand their rights and responsibilities\, and engage confidently in decision-making. The guidance provides practical support for youth workers and organisations\, explaining why democratic education matters\, outlining key legal\, ethical and practice principles\, and offering clear advice on facilitating safe\, inclusive and impartial discussions. The event will introduce the guidance\, share key research findings\, and explore what effective informal democratic education looks like in practice through real-world scenarios\, case studies and practical examples. It will be of interest to youth work practitioners\, managers\, policymakers\, academics and young people committed to strengthening participation\, democracy and youth voice. \n\n\n\n\nDr Carole Pugh (LinkedIn page here) is an expert in youth work and political socialisation\, with over 20 years’ experience in practice\, research and education.\n\n\n\n\n\nNYA (LinkedIn page here) sets standards\, accredits training and supports safe\, high-quality youth work across England\, championing youth voice through programmes such as Youth Council UK and the UK Youth Parliament.

SUMMARY:Youth Work Insight - Learning from Youth Work in Faith Communities: Creating inclusive and empowering spaces for young people
DESCRIPTION:Faith-based youth work has played an important role in the development of youth work in the UK and around the world. Many of the earliest forms of youth work began when faith communities responded to the needs of young people in their local areas.  \n\n\n\nCompared to faith-based youth work\, state-funded and other non-religious forms of youth work have a much shorter history. Over time\, faith-based youth work has continued to grow and adapt\, responding to the changing needs of young people. Today\, it includes a wide range of approaches\, activities and organisations that support young people’s learning\, wellbeing\, relationships and personal development.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are pleased to be joined at this Youth Work Insight by…

SUMMARY:Enrichment Entitlement and Benchmarks: New Opportunities for the Youth Sector
DESCRIPTION:The Department for Education’s new Enrichment Benchmarks\, published in June 2026\, mark a significant shift in how schools and colleges will approach enrichment from September 2026 onwards. \n\n\n\nFor youth sector organisations\, this presents a major opportunity. Together\, we’ll explore how the youth sector can help shape local enrichment ecosystems and ensure more young people benefit from meaningful enrichment opportunities. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we’ll cover: \n\n\n\n\nA practical overview of the Enrichment Entitlement and Benchmarks\, and why they matter for youth sector organisations.\n\n\n\nCase studies showcasing successful partnerships between schools\, colleges and youth organisations\, including how these relationships were established and sustained.\n\n\n\nFacilitated discussions on the opportunities\, challenges and gaps participants are seeing in their local communities.\n\n\n\nTime to reflect on your organisation’s potential role in local enrichment provision and identify priorities and next steps for the next 12–18 months.

SUMMARY:Standing Together in Solidarity: Reflection & Collective Care sessions
DESCRIPTION:Recent demonstrations and rhetoric linked to far right groups\, since 2024\, have been deeply distressing for many in our communities. Across the country\, we have heard from youth workers\, volunteers\, and organisations about the impact on young people\, on those who support them\, and on the spaces where young people gather and grow.  \n\n\n\nAs national youth organisations\, we stand together in visible solidarity against racism\, Islamophobia\, and all forms of divisive rhetoric. We know these issues cut deeply into questions of identity and belonging – for young people\, for communities\, and for everyone working in the youth sector.  \n\n\n\nWe have listened and we have heard. In response\, we are currently taking these actions:  \n\n\n\n\nCreating spaces of solidarity and connection:  NYA\, UK Youth and network of RYWU will host the first convening sessions for the sector\, offering a space to share\, connect\, and support one another. \n\n\n\nMaking space for youth sector voices to be heard: ensuring the experiences of youth workers\, volunteers and organisations are recognised by a wide range of audiences\, helping shape the wider conversation. \n\n\n\nSupporting what already exists: this convening builds on the powerful local\, regional\, and national work already happening. We see this as a collective effort: these three organisations are stepping forward to coordinate the first session\, but it belongs to the whole sector\, and we warmly welcome all partners to shape and contribute to what comes next. \n\n\n\nSharing and signposting resources to strengthen local responses\, including practical tools for organisations\, youth workers and volunteers. \n\n\n\nAmplifying anti-oppressive practice: calling people in\, not shutting them out\, and supporting the difficult but vital conversations that help communities grow stronger. \n\n\n\n\nUK Youth\, The National Youth Agency\, the Network of Regional Youth Work Units and the Muslim Youth Alliance are planning further Standing Together in Solidarity: Reflection & Collective Care sessions. \n\n\n\nThe next session is at 10am on Friday 3rd July.

SUMMARY:Standing in Solidarity Space 4 - Disinformation\, riots\, misogyny\, global conflict and racism
DESCRIPTION:NYA\, RYWU and UK Youth will be joined by Zubeda Limbada – founding Director of ConnectFutures – a female-led social enterprise founded in 2013 which delivers training and research around disinformation\, extremism\, anti-racism\, hate and violence. As adults and educators try to grapple with the range of intersectional social issues\, what are some of the practical insights we can provide to those working with young people? How can we understand\, explore\, explain and really make sense in a way that empowers and educates rather than divides in a fast changing arena? Finally\, how can we centre young people to be the advocates for change?

SUMMARY:Youth Workers at the Heart of Violence Prevention\, a webinar with Professor Carlene Firmin
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Carlene Firmin (Durham University) this February as she shares new research that shines a spotlight on the ways youth workers safeguard young people impacted by violence. \n\n\n\nThe findings show that youth workers are often the trusted adults young people turn to. They build safe\, youth led spaces where early intervention\, de escalation\, and meaningful relationships can thrive. \n\n\n\nFrom referring young people into safeguarding systems\, advocating for their needs in those systems\, building safety in the places they spend their time\, and understanding what young people need\, youth workers are uniquely positioned to provide protect young people and promote their welfare. \n\n\n\nYet despite this central role\, youth workers often face challenges such as inconsistent recognition within safeguarding systems\, short term funding that undermines stable provision\, and power imbalances that limit their influence in multi agency structures. Carlene will explore these barriers while highlighting how youth centred\, relational practice is essential to safeguarding young people impacted by extra-familial harm.
