These standards promote good safeguarding practices for those working with children and young people, adults at risk, volunteers and paid staff. Safeguarding Standards for the Youth Sector This document sets out how best to embed a culture of safeguarding across your organisation to support staff (paid and unpaid) and young people.
Risk Assessment Process
Risk assessments should always be considered in the context of the potential benefits of the specific programme, location or activity for the young people participating.
Incident Reporting
An incident is any unplanned event that could result in injury or ill health, damage or loss to property, including data losses and/or a negative impact on reputation
Critical Incident Response
Youth work organisations and workers must be prepared and know what to do if faced with an emergency or critical incident i.e. a situation that overwhelms the immediate staff team and requires the wider support of the organisation and/or external support services.

Health and Safety: Introduction to the Legal Background
Whilst the aims of youth programmes will vary, safety should always be a core consideration. The benefits gained from well planned activity will normally be clear to see and will outweigh health and safety risks.
First Aid Provision
A first aid needs assessment should be conducted by youth work organisations to ascertain the first aid arrangements required for the programme as a whole or for each activity. When undertaking a first aid needs assessment the following considerations should be taken into account:
Medication
Youth work organisations should ensure that they have a policy and procedures in place for managing young people’s personal medication, and ensure that policies take into account the full range of activities and services that may be provided. This may include residential programmes, instances of remote supervision, programmes overseas, or in remote areas where access to professional medical provision may be delayed and/or contact with parents/guardians may not be immediate.
Safeguarding for Youth Work
This document outlines safeguarding policy and procedures for the protection of children and young people at risk. Every organisation and its individual staff members have a duty of care to ensure the protection of the young people they are working with, from unnecessary risk and/or harm.
