The NYA Youth Work Academy

Life is presenting a range of unprecedented challenges to young people, from the economic and social impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, to reductions in service provision and severely impacted educational opportunities. Support from an effective and highly skilled Youth Work sector has never been more important.

The Academy aims to enhance the skills of Youth Work practitioners through our dedicated online learning platform. We want everyone who provides support to young people to have the skills, knowledge and confidence to do so safely and effectively. 

Young people are our future, ensuring those who support them have the skills and qualifications to enable each young person to reach their full potential is vital.

Accredited Learning

Level 2 Award in Youth Work Principles

The level 2 qualification prepares those who work with young people in a youth work setting on their own personal learning journey, gaining knowledge, and understanding of the key principles of youth work. No prior qualifications are required to undertake the course.  This qualification assists in building confidence and skills, to work holistically whilst facilitating the personal and social development of young people and to do this the award covers the following units:

  • Theory of Youth Work
  • Safeguarding
  • Young People’s Development
  • Engaging and Communicating with Young People

The Level 2 Award is a stand-alone qualification but also provides the progression route onto the level 3 qualifications, if you wish to continue your future learning journey into the fantastic world of youth work.

Level 2 Certificate in Youth Work Practice

Building on your knowledge of experience and understanding, working with young people. This qualification supports the learning journey to become a competent Youth Support Worker.  The units you will undertake:

  • Theory of Youth Work
  • Safeguarding
  • Young People’s Development
  • Engaging and Communicating with Young People
  • Anti-Discriminatory Practice in Youth Work
  • Reflective Practice
  • Work-Based Practice
  • Group Work Within a Youth Work Setting
  • Working with Behaviour that Challenges in Youth Work Settings

This course will provide a good foundation and working within the requirements for occupational competence within the JNC framework.

Learners who achieve this qualification may wish to complete additional units to achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice.

Level 3 Certificate in Youth Work Practice

Embracing the National Occupational Standards for Youth Work, this course will support the skills required to become a competent Youth Support Worker, gaining further knowledge especially the values, core principles and current policies that underpin youth work. 

On your learning journey you will be certificated for the units and qualification you achieve; these will also provide the basis to continue your learning and by undertaking these additional units and demonstrating practice for 60 hours you can achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice.

Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice

This qualification provides the fundamentals of youth work by embracing the National Occupational Standards. As youth workers we talk about transformational and holistic learning to support young people as they develop, achieving this qualification enables you to further develop your own skills. You can progress to Further Education or Higher Education programmes such as a youth and community degree as the course provides a mix of academic and practical skills including 80 hours demonstrating your practice, preparing you for the exciting range of jobs across different sectors.

CPD

We can also support youth workers and organisations to take their learning further with an expanding range of informal learning opportunities. Our CPD Catalogue holds an extensive selection of short courses and webinars on topics such as safeguarding, participation or supporting young people digitally.

Bespoke Learning

The Academy also offers bespoke training which caters for a range of professional development needs, from those new to youth work to qualified practitioners who are developing their practice and competencies.  Our online digital blended learning fits the needs of both organisations and youth workers, providing learners with global access to sector experts.

We’ve recently developed and delivered courses including Youth Work Skills training with the Premier League.
