Youth Work Week 2024 – A right to youth work for all

AutismAble, South Shields 

Amongst those getting involved are AutismAble’s youth provision, the Youth Hub in South Shields, South Tyneside. The young people with special educational needs there have written and recorded songs, created stop motion movies about their youth club and collaborated on an outdoor mosaic mural. They will be hosting a showcase event to perform and exhibit their artworks on Wednesday 6th November from 1-3pm, at the Hub.  

OutYouth Group (LGBTQ+), Plymouth

At the OutYouth Group (LGBTQ+) Community Connections, Community Youth Team Plymouth, young people have been crafting individual flags celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, identity and diversity in the run up to their Youth Work Week celebrations. All unique pieces have been sewn together to create one large flag representing how unique young people come together at the youth group: making friends, finding support, unity and inclusivity.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Young People’s Services

In Lancashire, young people who are part of the Young Blackburn with Darwen (BwD) Youth Forum and represent youth organisations from across the borough, met in August to discuss how they could collaboratively bring the Art of Youth Work campaign to life. Chaired by the BwD Youth MP, Zainab Shah, each representative agreed to produce an artwork during half term, created by the various youth club’s young people, which would reflect the vibrant inclusivity and diversity within their organisations. Young people have produced rap music, spoken word poems, songs, canvases and paintings.

Croydon Drop In

Croydon Drop In are taking part in the Youth Work Art Campaign and will be showcasing their work at their AGM. Some of their Outreach Team and the Young People’s Team are creating a mixed media canvas which will be shown at their AGM.

Gosforth Civic Theatre

As part of their Youth Work Week celebrations, Gosforth Civic Theatre shared a video of their Youth Dance and Youth Voices groups.

Haxby and Wiggington Youth and Community Association

The young people at Haxby and Wiggington Youth and Community Association, wrote what they enjoyed and how they had benefited from Youth Work on green pieces of paper which were then turned into the leaves of a stylised Youth Work Tree. This tree is on display in the cafe of our community centre which is shared with their local library.

SMASH Youth Project

At SMASH Youth Project this week youth workers supported a young person to rediscover their love of painting, and gave them the space and time to get creative in a way they hadnt in a long time.

As part of their Youth Work Week celebrations, Youth Working held a session with it’s young people exploring Diwali.

At Waterside Centre this week youth workers and young people worked together to create an acrostic poem for youth work week!

In the Mix Project

Addressing the Youth Work Week theme of Youth Work for all this year, In the Mix Project highlighted how young people are at heart of everything they do, and that they are committed to providing safe and inclusive environments for open-minded, non-judgemental discussions.

Manchester Youth Zone

Manchester Youth Zone celebrated their 12th birthday recently, and this week they shared a video of their celebrations featuring performances from their young people!

This week YMCA Heart of England have shared their celebrations. They invited a talented local artist to come and decorate their provision with a fantastic sports mural.

Young Tower Hamlets

In celebration of National Youth Work Week, Tower Hamlets opened two new youth centres in Bigland Green and Christian Street. But first, they kicked off National Youth Work Week by celebrating junior young carers and children leaving care across the borough.

Additionally, the other 13 youth centres across the borough hosted a variety of activities and games, including music production, podcasting, spoken word, and Lego sculpture making.

Barking & Dagenham Council Youth Services

LBBD’s Youth Services put on an event during Youth Work Week that saw over 40 youth work professionals and around 100 young people take over The Vibe for a professional networking hour and event for young people. Partners included Box Up Crime, PAT Project, True Cadence, Peer2Peer, Plucky Skates, Future Youth Zone, Positive East, Sycamore Trust, Lifeline, Ab Phab, Subwize, Radiant Ambitions, Youth League, and Lifebrooks. The event were also joined by colleagues from St John’s Ambulance, who shared their incredible Young Responders programme and NYA who shared their NatWest Thrive initiative.
