The National Youth Agency is excited to announce the launch of our new Equity, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EEDIB) Standards—a comprehensive framework designed to ensure every young person feels seen, heard, and valued.

This innovative set of standards is an essential resource for youth workers, volunteers, and organisations dedicated to excellence in youth work.

"Our newly released EEDIB Standards are a comprehensive framework designed to ensure every young person feels seen, heard, and valued. We are committed to enabling accessible, inclusive environments that not only elevate the quality of youth work but also contribute significantly to the holistic development, learning, growth, and well-being of every young person. By embracing these standards, youth workers and volunteers will be ideally positioned to dismantle barriers, build systems of accountability, and nurture a future where every individual can thrive."

Abbee McLatchieDirector of Youth Work, National Youth Agency

The framework features six key standards:

  1. Championing Equity and Inclusion
The EEDIB Standards provide practical guidance to help youth workers challenge discrimination and remove barriers. By actively promoting equity and challenging discriminatory practices, youth work can contribute to dismantling systemic issues that limit the potential of young people.
  2. Creating Inclusive Environments
These standards emphasise the importance of making youth work services accessible to everyone, including those with hidden and visible disabilities. This involves making reasonable adjustments, removing physical and social barriers, and using inclusive communication methods to ensure no young person is excluded.
  3. Enhancing Professionalism and Accountability
The EEDIB Standards serve as a reminder that our primary accountability is to the young people we serve. They provide essential tools for enhancing professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement in youth services, ensuring high-quality, impactful practice.
  4. Addressing Systemic Inequalities
By actively promoting equity and challenging discriminatory practices, the EEDIB Standards help address systemic issues that perpetuate inequalities. Youth work can contribute to dismantling barriers that limit the potential of young people, both individually and collectively.
  5. Promoting Social Responsibility and Advocacy
Youth work shapes the values and perspectives of young people and youth workers. By applying these EEDIB Standards, practitioners can demonstrate values of social responsibility, empathy, and respect, supporting young people in contributing positively to a diverse and inclusive society.
  6. Facilitating Conversations on EEDIB
The stndards provide a framework for youth workers and volunteers to engage effectively in conversations about equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging with young people. These discussions help promote understanding, openness, and inclusivity, empowering young people to tackle injustice and inequality.

The National Youth Agency believes in the transformative power of youth work to create a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering future for all young people.
