Reacting to his OBE, Leigh Middleton, said:

I’m grateful and honoured to be recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

“As with so many youth workers, I started working with young people 31 years ago when I was only 15 years old myself. If anyone had told my 15-year-old self I’d receive such recognition, I’d never have believed them. It is a privilege to lead the team at the National Youth Agency and to know that our work is helping to deliver high-quality youth work which transforms the lives of young people.

“Young people have never needed the support of youth workers more, and my ambitions for the sector reflect my deep belief in the right of every young person to have access to safe spaces and skilled youth workers who can help them thrive.

“There have been some enormous challenges for the NYA and the sector, but we are beginning to see a step-change in how youth work is perceived and valued. But there is much work to be done to bring about a strong and sustainable sector.

“I humbly appreciate this OBE on behalf of my 15-year-old self and the whole youth work sector, whose tireless dedication and belief in young people is why I get up every morning.

“This award is a lovely way to mark 60 years of the NYA and the achievements of the very many inspiring organisations and individuals I have worked with since becoming a youth worker myself, many moons ago.”
