The National Youth Agency (NYA) has taken ownership of the assets which previously belonged to the British Youth Council and rights to all the BYC programmes, in order to enable young people to continue to have a voice in national and international political fora.
Harry Twohig, former Trustee, BYC, said: “I’m delighted that the NYA will be acting as custodian of the assets of the British Youth Council. At a time when young people are being impacted by a host of political and social issues, it is vital that the campaigns and resources built by BYC’s dedicated young people, staff and volunteers over the years are provided with a secure home, so that they can continue to have a positive impact for generations to come.
There is a strong history of collaboration between the two organisations, and I am grateful to the NYA for the commitment it has shown to young people through this act.”
Leigh Middleton, CEO, said: “The National Youth Agency recognises the huge legacy left by the BYC and importance of enabling young people to influence the political decisions which affect their lives, communities and society at large. The NYA has taken possession of all BYC’s assets, but we do not intend to absorb the BYC into our work over the longer term. Our focus is on working with young people and other BYC partners to ensure that it can be resurrected as a key part of our civil society infrastructure.”
The Department of Media Culture and Sport appointed the NYA to deliver the contract to run the UK Youth Parliament in April 2024. The NYA is also supporting the Young Ambassadors selected by the National Youth Council to represent the UK on the European Youth Forum and Commonwealth Youth Council.
