Participation of Young People within Safeguarding

This comprehensive intermediate course is designed for youth workers, voluntary sector and allied professionals who are keen to actively involve young people in their organisational safeguarding processes, and who wish to understand and implement safeguarding policies which prioritise youth participation, to help shape and embed safer practice. 

About the course

By proactively involving young people, organisations can create more effective safeguarding protocols that truly reflect young people’s experiences and concerns. This course will explore the importance of empowering young people and supporting them to take a central role in decision-making to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met, enabling them to become active partners in creating safer environments. 

On the course, you will explore:  

  1. The importance of young people’s Participation in Safeguarding processes
    Understand the definition and benefits of young people’s involvement in safeguarding, explore the legal framework around young people’s rights, and recognise the significance of creating safe, young people friendly environments. 
  2. Barriers that prevent young people from participating in Safeguarding processes:
    Identify the obstacles preventing young people from engaging in safeguarding processes and discover effective strategies to promote their involvement.
  3. Safeguarding policies and practices that centre on young people:
    Understand how to implement policies that prioritise young people’s needs, rights, and well-being, ensuring their voices are central to safeguarding practices.
  4. The role of young people in identifying and mitigating Safeguarding risks:
    Learn how young people can actively participate in identifying risks, making informed decisions, and advocating for safety in their environments.
  5. Ethical and professional responsibilities when working with young people in Safeguarding contexts:
    Gain insights into the ethical and professional standards required when working with young people in safeguarding contexts.
