Abbee Mclatchie, Interim CEO, National Youth Agency welcomes the Government’s announcement of investment in training 1,000 specialist youth work practitioners.

”“Every young person deserves access to the support, relationships and opportunities they need to thrive. The government’s pledge to bring 1,000 new specialist youth work practitioners into the sector is a welcome commitment to young people and to rebuilding the skilled youth workforce that supports them.

Youth workers are skilled specialists who build trusted relationships and provide the sustained, tailored support young people need to navigate challenges, fulfil their potential and stay connected to education, employment or training. This investment shows real recognition of the difference that high-quality youth work can make through early intervention.

A new Standard Qualification Framework for youth work, due to be published in October, will complement this investment by providing clearer, more accessible routes into and through the youth work profession. By helping to attract new entrants, upskill people already working and volunteering in the sector, and support progression towards professional status, the framework will strengthen recognition of youth workers’ skills and help build back a skilled, confident and sustainable workforce capable of meeting burgeoning demand and delivering lasting impact for young people.

We will work alongside government, youth sector partners, local youth partnerships, training providers, and regional partners to help local and regional youth work infrastructure develop, grow and build long-term capacity. By strengthening collaboration, sharing expertise and supporting locally led approaches, we can help create a more connected and sustainable youth sector, ensuring more young people in every postcode can access skilled support and opportunities. This is not a quick fix, but it is a bold and vital step forward.”
