Young people’s lives are increasingly shaped by technology, online communities and digital experiences. Whether that’s through gaming, social media, messaging platforms, creative tools or emerging technologies, digital spaces have become an important part of how young people connect, learn and express themselves.
This Digital Youth Work E-learning course has been developed with funding from the Fusion21 Foundation to help strengthen youth workers skills and confidence to deliver safe, effective and inclusive digital youth work.
What is digital youth work?
Digital youth work is the use and integration of digital tools, activities and topics within youth work practice. It is not about replacing face-to-face youth work, but instead creates opportunities to engage, support and empower young people in ways that reflect their lives today.
From Discord groups and gaming platforms to esports and immersive technology, digital youth work offers endless ways for youth workers to connect with young people, ensuring everyone has access to vital youth work support.
When designed with young people, digital approaches can improve accessibility, strengthen community connections and help reach young people who may face barriers to in-person provision.
The course is divided into four modules:
- Introduction to digital youth work
Understand what digital youth work is, why it matters and how it can enhance youth work practice. - Safeguarding in digital youth work
Explore safeguarding principles, digital risk assessment, professional boundaries and platform-specific considerations. - Trending and emerging technologies
Learn about developments in gaming, esports, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies shaping young people’s lives. - Digital literacy, safety and wellbeing
Develop approaches to promoting digital literacy, supporting online safety and helping young people build healthy digital habits.
